Aadi Perukku — the word Aadi is derived from the word Aashada, the month that begins mid July and ends mid August, and Perukku means to multiply or proliferate. This day is also called the Padinettam Perukku as it falls on the eighteenth day of Aadi month. Aadi Perukku is the celebration of monsoon season. The rivers are overflowing, and sowing, planting and crops cultivation is at its peak. It is very special for the people living in and around the Cauvery delta. On this day, Goddess Parvathi is revered by offering prasadams or sweetened rice offerings and chitrannnam or rice cooked in various flavours. Vaishno Devi Homam is very special on an auspicious day like Aadi Perukku and only this yagya can bring you prosperity in abundance. The ritual pays obeisance to the beautiful goddess Durga whose energies are intensified during the month of Aadi. Vaishno Devi or Vaishnavi Devi is one of the Ashta Matrikas that emerged from the energies of Lord Vishnu for annihilating demon Andhakasura.
In the hills of Trikuta, situated in Jammu region is the temple of Vaishno Devi, the most revered and sought-after goddess of the Kali Yuga. She emanated from the combined energies of goddesses Maha Kali, Saraswathi and Lakshmi. She was born in a south Indian family that followed the Vaishnava (followers of Lord Vishnu) tradition and hence was named Vaishnavi. Since birth, Vaishnavi was a great devotee of Lord Rama and wanted to marry him. But Lord Rama was married to Sita and would think of no other woman. So he asked her to wait for him until his next avatar as Kalki in Kali Yuga. To this day, the goddess is said to be waiting for her consort in the Trikuta Mountains performing strict penance with deep devotion.
Also, the three feminine powers that created Vaishno Devi using their satvic, tamasic and rajasic nature or gunas entrusted her the responsibility of upholding righteousness and demolishing evil. She also ensures that you receive positive outcomes in all your endeavours and also helps you achieve goals.
While the month of Aadi is goddess month, revering Mother Adi Shakti during this month is very auspicious. Goddess Vaishno Devi or Vaishnavi Devi is a very powerful form that emerged along with the Ashta Matrikas to kill the demon. She is a wish- fulfilling goddess who when worshipped understands the needs of her followers. Adi Perukku is a time for thanks giving to the supreme goddess for granting abundance of prosperity like good crops and good life.
