Athi Rudram Maha Yagam
For universal peace and prosperity and for the fulfillment of all wishes.
Who is Lord Rudra?
Lord Rudra is a ferocious aspect of Lord Shiva, who is the embodiment of destruction and unlimited love. Rud means sorrow. Ra means destroyer. Rudra is the One who destroys your sorrows.
Why Athi Rudra Maha Yagam?
Athi Rudra Maha Yagam is a very important form of worship of Lord Siva, the very source of cosmic energy for the entire creation. His divine form encompasses and extends far beyond all known and unknown galaxies and universes. Lord Siva is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and all pervading. He is the conqueror of Death and an embodiment of infinite mercy, compassion and love. We owe our existence to the Divinity and are duty bound to think of Him constantly and worship Him gratefully for the welfare of all humanity and creation.
Lord Siva is worshipped traditionally in the form of Linga resembling the replica of Brahmanda. Sage Satapatha in his treatise "Maharnava Karma Vipaka? listed four types of abhisheka procedures compatible with Vedic and scriptural lore as abhisheka is the Lord?s favourite form of worship. These are Rudram, Ekadasa Rudram, Maha Rudram and Athi Rudram each being more potent than the preceding one. Of these, the most potent form of Athi Rudram involves 14641 Rudrams (Rudram is a combination of Namakam and Chamakam given in Rudradhyayam in the 5th Prapathakam of the 4th Kanda of Krishna Yajur Veda Samhita). Namaka recited once along with recital of Chamaka once constitutes one Rudram. Recital of 11 Namakas along with one Anuvaka of Chamaka at the end of each Namaka, thus completing one Chamaka constitutes Ekadasa Rudram. Recital of 11 Ekadasa Rudrams is Laghu Rudram or Rudraikadasini. Recital of 11 Laghu Rudrams is one Maha Rudram. Recital of 11 Maha Rudrams is one Athi Rudram.
Therefore, in Athi Rudram 14641 Rudrams include 14641 Namakams and 1331 Chamakams. Simultaneously with Rudrabhisheka, Rudra Homas are conducted by 121 priests well versed in Vedic rituals in 11 Homa Kundas erected for the purpose. A Linga is installed especially for the purpose of conducting Rudrabhishekam daily. Side by side the Rudra Parayanas and Rudra Homas, and other related rituals will also be performed. This Maha Yaga is performed for "Loka Kalyana" and good of humanity as well as to ensure universal peace and prosperity.

The performance of ATHIRUDRAM is rare because of its lengthy process, need for dedicated involvement of a large number of vedic priests and high financial requirements. The Rudram starts with Nyaasam, meaning the one who chants, who would visualize himself with each of his parts of the body as given to a deity. The chanter then surrenders body, mind and spirit (aatma) to the deity and become one with him. Thus the effect of Rudra Parayanam will be distributed to entire universe; An important point to note here is that Rudram is the only Mantra which starts with a prostration to Lord Parameswara (Om Namo Bhagavathey Rudraaya). In the Vedas none of the mantras start with prostration. This makes Rudram the ultimate and supreme mantra, amongst other great mantras. "Maano Mahantha muthamaano arbhakam Maana ukshantha muthamaana Ukshitham. Maanovathi: Pitharam Motha Matharam Priyaamaanasthanuvo Rudra Reerishaha?.("O Lord. Please save all of us, including our parents, elders and even unborn children from all calamities)"Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pusti vardhanam Urvarukamiva bandhanan mrtyor mukshiya mamritaat"(Oh we worship and adore you, Oh three-eyed one, Oh Shiva. You are sweet gladness, the fragrance of life, which nourishes us, restores our health, and causes us to thrive. As, in due time, the stem of the cucumber weakens, and the gourd is freed from the vine, so free us from attachment, death and do not withhold immortality).
