Rameswaram Jyotirlinga Temple is a famous pilgrimage centre that is the abode of Lord Ramanathaswamy in the form of a Linga, which is said to have been installed and worshipped by Lord Rama. And hence the name Ramanathaswamy whose consort is Goddess Parvathavardini. Lord Hanuman was sent to the Himalayas to bring the linga, but when there was a delay, Mother Sita made a Linga out of sand called the Ramalingam. This is the Linga that’s seen in the main sanctum.
Situated on Rameshwaram island in Tamil Nadu, the Rameswaram Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. As per Lord Rama’s instructions, Lord Hanuman’s Vishwalingam is worshipped first even today. It’s the most sacred of all and is believed to be the actual representation of Lord Shiva.
There are 64 Theerthams or holy water bodies in and around Rameswaram and having a ceremonial bath in them is considered equivalent to observing a penance. It’s believed that devotees who visit this temple shall find a place in Shivaloka. Pilgrims who visit Kashi must visit this temple to complete their pilgrimage.

There are two lingams inside the sanctum called Ramalingam and Viswalingam. Ramalingam was built by Devi Sita and Viswalingam was brought by Hanuman from Kailash. The abode of Sri Ramanathaswamy is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams revered by saint poets, Appar, Sundarar, and Tirugnana Sambandar.
