Bhavani Sangameswarar temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva  located in Erode, Tamil Nadu. The temple has a traditional South Indian style, with features of a spectacular five-tier architecture, with delighted entrance called 'Rajagopuram'. The temple was built at the confluence of rivers Kaveri, Bhavani and ‘Amutha Nadhi’, an invisible water source.  Lord Shiva is also called Sangameswarar. The temple is situated at the puthill of Padma Giri and is surrounded by three hills which are Naga Giri, Veda Giri and Sanga Giri.
 
History

Bhavani Sangameshwarar temple is an ancient temple, having  built by Pallava King, Mahendra Verman. The bird’s eye view of this temple island surrounded by  two rivers. It is also said that a British dignitary by the name of William Garo donated a Swing (Oonjal) made of ivory after he miraculaly escaped from the collapse of his Rest house in the year 1802.  As saved by God is Bhavani Sangameswarar become an ardent ardent devotee signature was engraved on the frame of the cradle.

As per the legend, Lord Kuberan ( Lord of wealth) was visiting  Lord Shiva temples when he saw an Ilandhai tree on the banks of Kaveri. He was astonished to see that a tiger a deer, a cow, an elephant, a snake and a rat were drinking water without any sign of enmity.  He felt that the peace and prosperity of this place could be due to the worship and penance performed by the holy men (Gandharvas) who inhabited this place. It is believed that Lord Kuberan heard a voice from the sky saying that this was the place where the Vedas had originated and that he would find a Shivalingam beneath the Ilandhai tree. He was also advised to worship the Shivalingam to seek the Lord Shiva blessings.
 
Another legend associated with this place is that Sage Vishwamitra is said to have installed another lingam on the banks of the Kaveri and worshipped it by chanting the Gayathri Mantram.
Bhavani Sangameswarar Temple Story

The main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva, At the Main entrance,  shrines of Lord Ganesha on the left and Lord Anjaneya on the right can be seen. Inside the main tower, the shrines of Lord Raja Ganapathi and Lord Muthukumaraswami are present in the temple.The shrines of Lord Vinayaka, Lord Muruga and his consorts, Goddess Gajalakshmi, sixty three Nayanmars, Lord Jurahareshwarar (dancing posture), "Pancha Bhootha" Lingam, Kasi Viswanathar, Goddess Visalakshmi, and Goddess Jeshtadevi can be place in the corridors. Separate shrines for Lord Perumal, Goddess Soundaranayaki and Yoga Narasimhar are also present in this temple.

Features of this temple

  • Bhavani is a popular Sthalam for performing rituals to satiate one’s ancestor. Here Parikarams are also conducted for all dhoshas, including Nagadhosha. Daily Gomadha Pooja (Cow pooja) is performed in this temple for the welfare of the people. Cows are revered in Hindu mythology because every body part of a cow is attributed to a separate Hindu Gods or Goddesses.
  • Saint Arunagirinathar in his Thirupugazh praised Lord Muruga of this temple.
  • Lord Dakshinamoorthy shrine is beautifully architected with intricate reliefs.
  • The procession idols of all the sixty three Nayanmars are beautifully arranged Sequentials. 

Greatness of this temple

It is believed that those who take a dip at the Kaveri and Bhavani during the Solar and Lunar Eclipse can attain moksham(salvation).
 
It is also believed that worshiping the amirtha lingam in this temple can grant the boon of child birth to couples.
 
The thirteen-day of Ther in the month of Chithirai (April-May) is the most aspicious festival celebrated in this temple. It attracts lakhs of devotees from across of the country. The 18th day of tamil month Aadi (July-August) is called “Adiperukku” and who perform the pujas on the river banks.

  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets ,caps ,turbans and hats inside the temple premises
