Vilakkoli Perumal temple in Kancheepuram is one among the108 Divya Desasam of Lord Vishnu Perumal granted darshan to Mother Saraswathi in this temple. The place is also known by the name Thoopul as it was dense with Dharba grass then.

This is the birth place of noted Vaishnava Acharya Sri Vedanta Maha Desika, hence the Acharya is also praised as Thoopul Vedanta Desikan. Saint Tirumangai Azhwar had sung his Mangalasasanam on the temple.

Sri Maha Desikan is a gift to his mother who prayed to Lord seeking child boon. Responding to her prayer, Lord of Tirupati Lord Venkatachalapathi asked the Bellin His hand to be born the son of the mother.  Bell is not used during pujas in Tirupati temple after this event.

Desikas son Nayina Varadachari completed the construction of this temple, it is said.   There is a separate shrine for Sri Desika in the temple.  Lord Lakshmi Hayagriva idol worshipped by Sri Desika is still in the temple.  His Avatar Utsav is celebrated in the temple on the Revathi star day in Chithirai month-April-May.

The temple is open from 7.30 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Tooppul, or Tiruththanka (also called Deepaprakasa Perumal Temple) located in Kanchipuram in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu.

Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th - 9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Deepa Prakasa Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Maragathavalli.

Once there was a argument with Saraswathi and Sri lakshmi that who is greatest of them. They asked Brahma he said Sri lakshmi is the best. As the result Saraswathi got angry and she went to Ganga to perform penance.

Lord Brahma wanted to come with him again, but saraswathi didn't so he performed Ashwametha Yaga to keep Saraswathi with him. But Demons wanted to destroy that yaga, they stopped light by covering the sky. At that time Sriman Narayanar appeared in the form of "Light", so he is called as Deepa Prakasar.

Deepam means Light and Prakasam means flash. Finally by using that light brahma performed that yaga and he got saraswathi back to him. In Sri Deep Prakasar Perumal Temple, Lord Vishnu is in Nidra Thirukkolam. He destroys the darkness so he called as Vilakku Oli Perumal.

The specialty of this stalam is, this is the avathar stalam of Sri Vedantha Desikar. Other shrines in this temple are Lakshimi Hayagreevar, Nayina Varadachariyar and Alwars. Mangalasasanam to this temple has 2 Paasurams, which are written by Thirumangai Alwar.
