Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is located in Thrissur district, Kerala,India. The Temple is also known as Kodungallur Devi Temple. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali where Goddess Kali is worshiped. This temple is considered, the original form of Goddess Kali. Kodungallur was once the capital of the Chera Kingdom. Which emerged as an important city during that time. It is considered that this temple is situated in the heart of Kerala, which is referred by the Tamil speakers. This temple was built many years ago, the worship has included ancient Shakti traditions which are not found in any other temple of Kerala. Here is the tradition of offering a red dhoti to the God of the temple. Apart from this, many devotees dedicate expensive gifts and gold and silver to the Goddess. Local people of Kodungallur believe that this place was once used as the temple of Lord Shiva and Parasuram had set up a statue of Goddess Bhadrakali near Shiva temple. In addition to being able to believe that the Puja devoted here is done according to the direct instructions of Devi Maa. Apart from this, here five ‘Shri Chakra’ have been established by Adi Shankaracharya, who is considered being the main source of the powers of this Goddess. The priests here are Namboodiris and Adikas, who have the right to offer floral tributes to the Goddess.
The earthly abode of Goddess Bhadrakali, a gentler reincarnation of Goddess Kali, the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple witnesses a bizarre seven-day festival celebrated annually, the Bharani Festival. Men and women wearing red apparel and carrying swords swarm this Indian temple, running around in a trance-like state. They hit their heads with the sword, blood pours freely, and they enter the temple hurling choice abuses and singing lewd songs about the Devi. Offerings are not made in the general fashion, instead, they are thrown at the statue of the goddess, and the temple rafters are hit repeatedly with sticks. The temple is shut down for 7 days after the festival, admittedly to clean the blood stains. As per legacy says that Sage Parasurama after the creation of Kerala was harassed by an evil demon called Daruka so he prayed to Lord Shiva and on his advice he constructed a shrine and installed shakthi Devi or Parashakthi as the deity. Legend says that Bhadrakali another face of Goddess Sakthi Devi killed the evil demon.
