Shanakri Devi Temple is situated in an east coast town of Srilanka, Tricomalee (Tri  Cona  Malai = a triangular hill).Along with the temple of Shaankari Devi, there is a temple of Lord Shiva  TRIKONESHWARA Temple.

The deity was worshipped more than 2500 years ago, even before Prince Vijay one of the first Kings who is said to have landed in Sri Lanka during 300 BC. The Trikoneshwara temple at its height of glory was one of the richest temples in the South.

The ancient Shiva temple was a large structure on the rock. According to Archaeological and literary evidence, there were at least three temples on the hill top.

The Gopurams of the temples were taller than one another and the tallest gopuram overseeing the Indian Ocean, had the main deity. The main temple itself was a huge structure with nearly 1000 pillars supporting the huge hall and many small mandaps.

Shankari Devi temple is located in Trimkomali, or Trincomalee on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. The place Trinconmalee means a triangular shaped hill (Tri- cona- malee or malai). This temple is dedicated to goddess parvathi and is one among 18 Maha Shakthi peethas.

When Sati, the wife of Shiva, sacrificed herself at the Yajna performed by her father Daksha, a very distraught Shiva started dancing with her body. He was dancing the dance of destruction. And the gods said, "Oh, we are doomed! Shiva is dancing the dance of destruction.

Vishnu took his bow and cut the body of Sati into fifty-one pieces with his arrows. And wherever a piece of the Divine Mothers body fell on earth, that place became a Shakti Peetha.

Shankari Devi Shakthi Peeth is one of the important Ashta Dasha Shakthi Peeth. Here Devi Satis groin had fallen. Devi Sati is worshipped as Shankari Devi and Lord Shiva as Trikoneshwara.
