Nithya
Kalyana Perumal Temple is located in a small village named
Thiruvidanthai on East Coast Road (ECR) which connects the cities
Chennai and Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, India. The distance of Nithya
Kalyana Perumal temple from Chennai is around 42 km and from
Mamallapuram it is 16 km.
Nithya Kalyana Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams (108
most important temples of Lord Vishnu). The presiding deities of the
temple are Adhi Varaha Perumal and Nithya Kalyana Perumal.
Varaha is one
of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, who has the face of a pig and body
of a human being. The main shrine of the temple has the idol of Varaha (Adhi Varaha Perumal).
Lord Varaha is in standing position, holding the
goddess Lakshmi on his left side, and hence the village got the name
"Thiru Idathu Eanthai, which means "Lord holding Lakshmi on the left
side in Tamil language. Over a period of time, the name of the place
became "Thiruvidanthai. You can find the heads of Nagaraja and his wife
below the foot of Lord in the main shrine.
Thiruvidandai" (Tamil: திருவிடந்தை) is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples in the Sri Vaishnava sect of Hinduism. It is located near Chennai, about 19 Kilometers south of Thiruvanmiyur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
It is considered a Varaha Kshetram. This temple is widely believed to bestow good luck to those wishing to get married, and help remove obstacles that prevent marriages.
The temple was built by Pallavas. It is near the seashore. A large temple tank is in front of the temple. This is known as the Kalyana Theertham . There is a separate shrine for Komalavalli Nachiyar.
The Lord here stands on Adisesha and holds his consort on his left thigh. There is also separate shrine for Andal. The Temple follows Thenacharya Sampradayam.
Sage Gavalaa Maharishi had 360 daughters. He was determined to get them married. He prayed to Lord Vishnu. The Lord who resides here promised the sage that he would marry one daughter a day and married all 360 in a year.
So the Lord is called 'Nithya Kalyana Perumal'. The Lord then immediately converted all the daughters into one and kept on his left lap. Hence the name is called "ThiruVidandai".
Of the celebrated 108 Divya Desas of Lord Vishnu, this is the only temple, where the Wedding Festival is celebrated throughout the year all the 365 days of the year. Women facing delays in their wedding are advised to pray to Mother in the temple.
