Astonishing Facts on Lord Jagannath's Kitchen

The fire in this oven is called "Vaishnava agni" which is never put out for it is believed that Lord Vishnu's food itself is cooked here. Goddess Mahalakshmi is said to cook here for her consort Lord Vishnu. Another important feature of this kitchen is "The Prasad served before Rathyatra- this Prasad is cooked tasteless because during this period Lakshmi is said to have not concentrated on the food due to Lord Jagannath's sickness.

It is also said that if Lakshmi is displeased with the cooking, a dog is said to appear mysteriously somewhere on the temple complex. In such cases all the prepared food is dumped and the cooks start preparing fresh food all over again. It is strongly believed that the dog is "Kutama Chandi", a tantric Goddess who is in charge of checking the purity of the food since no dogs are allowed near the temple.

Another fascinating feature of this temple is the way the food is cooked. Five clay pots are placed one above another on the earthen oven. Though there are four pots below, the food from the one on the top is said to be cooked first which is yet another display of Lord Jagannath's immense miraculous power.

Everyday 5000 people are fed with the food cooked from Lord Jagannath's Kitchen. This Maha Prasad emphasizes on human bond for it serves millions of people without any caste or status discrimination. It is also said that during festivities and other important occasions more than 10 million devotees are fed here.
