Thiruthani Murugan Temple is a famous and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Muruga or Subrahmanya is located on a hilltop at Thiruthani. Legends have it that Lord Muruga got married to Valli at this holy place.

This temple attracts a large number of pilgrims every year from near and far off places.Devotees coming here go up a winding flight of 365 steps indicating the number of days in a year. There is also a road which reaches the temple complex at the summit.

The architecture of the temple and its gopurams (towers) and the sculpture of statues are eye-catching. The gold jewellery and garland decoration of the main idol further adds to its grandeur.

Next to the presiding deity, there is a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesh as well. There are large water tanks in and around the temple.

Krittikais which attract a large number of devotees to this shrine, the two outstanding annual festivals are the Aadi Krittikai and the 31st of December New Year Step Festival.

The float festival is celebrated in the month of Aadi, Bhramotsavam in the month of Maasi, during which Valli Kalyanam is celebrated on the 8th day, and the Skanda Sashti is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aippasi.

Apart from the puranic greatness of Tirutanikai, Saint Arunagirinathar, the illustrious devotee of Lord Muruga who lived 600 years ago, praised this hill as the chosen place for worship by devas and the favorite abode of saints performing prolonged tapas (austerities). He also compared this hill to Sivaloka (Bhuloka) and as the very soul of the world.

Tiruthani Murugan temple is a Hindu temple, on the hill of Thiruttani, Tamil Nadu,India, dedicated to Lord Muruga. The hill has 365 steps indicating 365 days of the year.It is one of the Arupadaiveedu, the six holy abodes of Lord Muruga.

It is one of the six revered shrines of Lord Skanda, Muruga or Karthikeya and represents the place where Subramanyar rested after destroying the demon Surapadman. It has been revered by Arunagirinathar in Tiruppugazh hymns.

Ramalinga Adigalaar is also associated with this shrine.According to one legend Subramanyar married Valli who is from the Vallimalai hills located nearby.Another legend has it that Skanda married Deivayanai the daughter of Indra, the King of the Gods. Lord Indra presented his elephant Airavatam as a gift to the couple.

However,upon Airavatam's departure Indra's wealth dwindled.Lord Subramanya is said to have offered to return the elephant, but Indra refused to accept it and insisted that that the elephant face his direction. Hence the image of the elephant in this temple also faces east.

It is also believed that Skanda bore the discus thrown by the demon Tarakasuran on his chest and hence the image of Subramanya in this temple bears a hollow in the chest and also that Skanda gifted the discus to Vishnu.

Skanda imparted knowledge of Tamil to the sage Agasthyar and hence he is regarded as Veeramurthy, Gnanamurthy and Acharyamurthy in this shrine.
