The temple is praised by Saint Tirugnana Sambandar in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 40th Shiva shrine on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in hymns.

The temple has a five tier Rajagopuram and two prakaras. The Balipeeta, Nandhi and a court hall are near the Rajagopuram. Mother graces from a shrine north of the Mahamandap. The Saint was seeking somebody to show the way (thurai kattudhal), Lord came in the guise of a hunter and helped the saint.

A Shiva devotee, Arulvithan by name used to take basketful of flowers for the Tirupalli Ezhuchi (waking up the Lord for the morning puja) crossing the river. To test his resoluteness, Lord caused floods. Shocked, the devotee was more struggling to save the flower basket for Lords puja than his life. Pleased Lord, showed him the bank Thurai of the river. Thurai means the bank of the river. Hence, He is praised as Thurai Kattum Vallalar Lord showing the bank of the river. Lord Shiva in the temple is a Swayambumurthy.
